The homes here

The homes we work on in Ballina

Ballina brick home

Sixties and seventies brick

The bulk of Ballina is low-set brick and tile on flat blocks, built when a bathroom was a small room with a bath in it. The plumbing of that era is often the real story: earthenware waste and early copper that is cheap to replace while a wall is open and expensive to reach once it is closed.

Rooms that need the layout changed

A lot of these bathrooms still have the bath under the window and a cubicle jammed in the corner, with the toilet in its own room next door. Opening the two into one and putting in a walk-in shower is the change that does the most here, and the flat slab-less construction usually makes it affordable.

Finishes and fixtures

What people choose in Ballina

Every bathroom is different, but these are the finishes we fit most often in Ballina homes.

Tile
Large-format porcelain in warm neutrals, which lifts the small rooms in Ballina's brick and tile houses.
Vanity
A wall-hung oak vanity with a stone top, replacing the original floor-standing unit and its dated kick.
Shower
A walk-in shower with a frameless screen, usually taken into where the separate toilet room was.
Tapware
Solid brass or good stainless. The river air is gentler than open beach but it is not nothing.
Storage
A mirror cabinet and a tall cupboard, gained from the wall the old toilet room used to hold up.

Where we work

Ballina and the river

We work Ballina, East Ballina, Lennox Head, Alstonville and Wollongbar, with Byron twenty minutes north and Lismore half an hour inland.

It is a run we make regularly, so a Ballina job is programmed the same way a Gold Coast one is.

Common questions

Bathroom renovation questions from Ballina

The room itself is usually modest, so what moves the number here is the pipework and whether the toilet wall comes out. Both are visible once we open a section at the free measure, which is why we do that before quoting rather than after.

Almost always yes. Earthenware waste and early copper are at the end of their lives in houses of this age, and replacing them with the wall already open costs a fraction of doing it later through finished tiling.

Usually. It is the most common change we make in Ballina and it turns two cramped rooms into one useful one. Whether the dividing wall carries anything decides how involved it is, and we check that at the measure.

Anywhere in Ballina is brackish enough to be worth thinking about, though it is gentler than open beachfront. Solid brass and good stainless are safe; thin chrome plate is the thing to avoid. It is a specification decision, not a construction one.

There is a travel component and it is itemised rather than hidden in the rates. We program the Northern Rivers in blocks so the trades run consecutively, which keeps that part of the number sensible.
